The KU Team Qualifies for the SPE PetroBowl® Championship 2024

In an exhilarating showcase of knowledge and expertise, the University of Kansas (KU) team has clinched a spot in the prestigious SPE PetroBowl® Championship 2024. This marks a triumphant return for KU, securing their place in the finals for the first time in more than a half-decade.

The PetroBowl® contest stands as the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) most significant student competition, attracting SPE chapters from around the globe. Participants engage in a rapid-paced quiz, delving into various subjects pertinent to the Exploration & Production (E&P) sector, allowing the brightest students to display their skills and knowledge to an international audience.

This competitive journey to the Championship involves 32 teams, meticulously selected through Regional Qualifiers within the six PetroBowl Super Regions. Each Super Region contributes five teams to the Championship, alongside the two finalist teams from the 2022 Championship, completing the roster of contenders.

Teams aspiring to compete in the PetroBowl Championship must first navigate through their respective Regional Qualifiers. This year's North American Regional Qualifier witnessed fierce competition, with 18 teams from Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. vying for a chance to proceed to the finals. The institutions that stood out and secured their places were University of Texas at Austin, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), University of Oklahoma, Penn State University, University of Kansas, and Colorado School of Mines.

The University of Kansas team, led by Petroleum engineering graduate students PO Longe (team captain) and Emera Raghda, showcased exceptional prowess to secure fifth place in the Regionals. Their achievement not only propels them into the six teams representing North America but also signifies KU's notable comeback to the PetroBowl stage since their last participation.

The 2024 PetroBowl Championship is slated to be the highlight of the SPE Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (ATCE) in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, on 23 September 2024. The event promises to be a remarkable gathering of the world's future petroleum engineering leaders, where the KU team will compete against the best from around the globe.
