OVERVIEW

The petroleum engineering graduate program has a long tradition of leading the nation in enhanced oil recovery. Researchers also work in CO2 sequestration and unconventional reservoir engineering and use artificial intelligence for data collection and management. KU offers graduate students opportunities to work with interdisciplinary research teams in laboratory facilities housed in state-of-the-art buildings like Slawson Hall, part of the new Earth, Energy and Environment Center.

DEGREES OFFERED

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering (Ph.D.)
  • Master of Science in Chemical Engineering (M.S.)

WORLD-CLASS RESEARCH

Tertiary Oil Recovery Program (TORP)

The Tertiary Oil Recovery Program conducts research and development designed to create new and refined processes that are applicable to Kansas. TORP also investigates the application of reservoir engineering and geology for characterization of Kansas oil reservoirs and disseminates information about tertiary oil recovery processes, water-flooding and reservoir management to the Kansas oil industry.

Center for Net Carbon Zero GeoEnergy Intelligence and Sustainability (C0GEiS)

The Center for Net Carbon Zero GeoEnergy Intelligence and Sustainability performs multidisciplinary research to develop disruptive and transformational physics-inspired, explainable and resilient AI systems to accelerate net carbon zero geo energy development efforts. It brings together top researchers with the support from industry to accelerate the development of smart tools and technologies that contribute to achieving U.S. clean energy, environment and climate targets.

KU is one of only 38 public institutions in the United States designated a top research university in North America by the Association of American Universities.
