Solon E. Summerfield Distinguished Professor Cory Berkland co-founded the company Orion BioScience along with KU Alumni Joshua Sestak. They are happy to announce that their startup has been recognized by Breakout Labs, a "Fund within the Thiel Foundation that supports early stage companies as they transition radical scientific discoveries out of the lab and into the market,” at their 2018 Annual Unboxing Showcase. At the event, nearly 300 investors, strategic partners, and community members made their way to the Pearl to watch 16 portfolio companies present their deep technologies.
About Orion BioScience, it is “a biotechnology company developing two platforms to treat autoimmune diseases and autoimmune associated inflammation. Founded in 2012 as a spinout from the University of Kansas, and now located in Omaha, NE, Orion brings together a talented team, including decades of executive start-up experience in Silicon Valley in both private and public Biotech. The combination of ground-breaking technologies, a proven team, and a region ready to expedite preclinical efforts, uniquely positions Orion to reach value-inflection points rapidly and cost-effectively.”
Professor Berkland earned a BS in chemical engineering at Iowa State University, an MS in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois, and a PhD in chemical and bimolecular engineering at the University of Illinois. He also completed his post doc work at the University of Illinois. Since joining KU, he has been involved with several startup companies including Orbis Biosciences, Orion BioScience, and Savara Pharmaceuticals.
