Mark B. Shiflett is a Distinguished Foundation Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas. Professor Shiflett has a joint appointment in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and the Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis. Professor Shiflett recently joined the University of Kansas as the final Foundation Professor in August 2016. Professor Shiflett received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware in 2001 and 1998. He received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from N.C. State University in 1989. Dr. Shiflett recently retired from the DuPont Company after 28 years of service. He was a Technical Fellow in the Central Research and Development organization which is located at the Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware. Professor Shiflett was also an adjunct professor at the University of Delaware in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Professor Shiflett is an inventor on 40 U.S. patents and has published over 70 articles on his research at DuPont. He was awarded the DuPont Bolton Carothers award in 2005, the ACS Hero of Chemistry award in 2006 and the University of Delaware presidential citation in 2007 for his development of hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant mixtures to replace chlorofluorocarbons which were linked to the depletion of the Earth’s ozone layer. Professor Shiflett was elected in 2014 to be a Fellow in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and in 2016 to be a Division Fellow in the American Chemical Society for his significant professional accomplishments and contributions to the chemical engineering profession. Professor Shiflett received the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Institute award for Industrial Research in 2016 for the development of non-ozone-depleting refrigerants which have led to the healing of the Earth’s ozone layer, new applications using ionic liquids, an environmentally friendly TiO2 process and mentoring and educating chemical engineers. Professor Shiflett is a licensed professional engineer and his research at KU will focus on environmentally friendly, energy efficient processes and products for the chemical industry.

DuPont Science & Innovation, Experimental Station, Wilmington, DE

  • Created and managed a discovery program developing microporous materials for separating N2 and CO2 from natural gas.
  • Created and managed a discovery program to develop new furan-based polymer membranes for gas separations.
  • Managed the DuPont ionic liquid patent portfolio and evaluating licensing opportunities.

Senior Research Associate/Principal Investigator (2009-2014)
DuPont CR&D, Experimental Station, Wilmington, DE

  • Managed a research team developing a pilot-scale wet treatment process to improve the photodurability of TiO2, technology transferred to the Chemours Company.
  • Created and managed a multi-disciplinary research team to develop a process for producing polyvinylfluoride (PVF) polymer using ionic liquids as new solvent media.
  • Developed a carbon fiber for heat transfer applications using a renewable DuPont fiber.
  • Managed 12 professionals through the development of a new TiO2 process based on oxalate chemistry.
  • Managed the CR&D chemical engineering hiring team and was a corporate Ph.D. recruiter at several universities.

  • Created the ionic liquids program in DuPont and led a team of scientists which developed new ionic liquids for a novel absorption cooling process and ionic solvents for capturing CO2 from flue gas emissions.
  • Developed new oxalate chemistry for digestion of ilmenite ore.

  • Developed and patented several new nanoporous materials which included nanoporous carbons for hydrogen storage and synthesis of nanoporous carbon    membranes for gas separation.

  • Led a team of engineers through the design of a commercial plant for producing a new Teflon® finish.
  • Responsible for successfully demonstrating a new environmental-friendly spray drying technology to densify fluoropolymer dispersions.

  • Developed a process to use a waste metal fluoride as the feedstock for a high-value-in-use fluoromonomer.
  • Designed and operated a pilot plant for collecting basic data on high temperature fluorination reactions.

  • Supervised a group of 5 engineers and 5 technicians to develop and study the performance of alternative refrigerants for replacing refrigerants (R-502 and R-22) in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.
