Chemical and Petroleum Engineering - Graduate Studies

Master's of Science Program Overview

Our department offers MS degrees in either Chemical Engineering or Petroleum Engineering. The MS program requires 21 hours of courses, including four or five core courses and two or three elective courses (depending on which degree the student is seeking), plus nine hours of research which includes 6 hours of CPE 803 (Master's research) and 3 hours of CPE 800 (seminar) for a grand total of 30 credit hours.Once the coursework is complete, the student will focus on thesis completion. When the student and their advisor agree the thesis is ready, the student will then take a final oral examination that may cover both course work and the thesis topic.

Basic Two Year Enrollment Plan for Chem E MS:

Fall Term 1:                 C&PE 701, 731, and 721
Spring Term 1:            C&PE 722, 732, and an elective course
Fall Term 2:                 Elective Course(s), Research hours with your advisor, Seminar C&PE 800
Spring Term 2:            Research hours and Seminar

Basic Two Year Enrollment Plan for Pet E MS:

Fall Term 1:                 C&PE 701, 731, and an elective course
Spring Term 1:            C&PE 771, 795 and an elective course
Fall Term 2:                 Elective Course(s), Research hours with your advisor, Seminar C&PE 800
Spring Term 2:            Research hours and Seminar 

Once enrolled, each student, with the help of graduate advisor and the student research director, shall, before the end of the first semester of M.S. study, submit a plan of study to the Associate Dean of Engineering for Graduate Study.
