Grad Student Robbie Hable named Statement Maker

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

Robbie Hable has been named one of Iowa State's 2017 Statement Makers

Robbie has done outstanding work here at KU as a member of Dr. Susan William's Biodiesel Initiative and as one of our School of Engineering Abassadors and a member of the GEA, but his friends at Iowa State still remember the amazing efforts and contributions he made there as an undergraduate too. Iowa 'STATEment Makers' is an honor that recognizes the early personal and professional accomplishments and contributions to society of Iowa State University's young alumni (graduates 32 years of age and under). Nominations are sought annually for 'STATEment Makers' who have made differences in their own lives, the lives of others, their communities, and/or their professions through ambitious efforts that reflect the scholarly, entrepreneurial, or service-oriented spirit of an Iowa State University education.

About him, they say "Robbie (A)(’13 chem engr) is on the verge of publishing the graduate research he’s pursuing as a PhD student at the University of Kansas, and it’s already creating a buzz. Robbie works to separate nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen from algae and convert into commercial products – including bio-crude oil -- through a process called hydrothermal liquefaction. The eco-friendly and more efficient twist? The algae he is studying was grown in and used to treat wastewater from a local municipal wastewater treatment facility. “What we discovered is the oil we produced from the wastewater algae is of higher quality,” he explains. “And the solid, char co-product we produced is of high value with potential catalytic, tissue, or phosphorus fertilizer application.” He hopes to someday manage his own research team or business unit in the sustainable fuel and chemical industry."

Congratulations to Robbie on this well deserved honor!
